A PATIENT'S JOURNEY TO GOOD HEALTH BEGINS WITH
GOOD COMMUNICATIONS

Welcome To The HUH "Commit To Sit" Portal

Howard University Hospital’s (HUH) has launched a “Commit to Sit” Campaign with a goal to improve the hospital’s overall patient experience by encouraging physicians (attending & residents) to sit, listen and connect with patients on a more consistent basis. The patient-centric initiative creates an environment that will help foster a more trusting physician/patient relationship as well as provide a platform for patients to share their experiences and let their concerns be heard.

What Is "Commit To Sit?"

“Commit to Sit” is an evidence-based initiative that offers enormous benefits for patients and staff alike,” says Dr. Robert Linton, HUH Chief Medical Officer. “When we can take a moment to listen to our patients and think about what’s happening in their environment, and then offer empathy as a response, it demonstrates that we care about them.”

Why Is It So Important?

Data shows that simply sitting (as opposed to standing) during patient encounters can have a significant impact on patient experience, provider-patient rapport, and patient compliance. It also affords clinicians the opportunity to better communicate and connect with our patients. Patients also perceive that more time was spent with them when clinicians sit at eye level. This initiative will help demonstrate our commitment to patient care. Establishing a good rapport with patients is a great way to enhance their experience and leave them with a good feeling about HUH and its services. This proven demonstration contributes to high-quality care, improved health outcomes and higher patient experience scores.

Who Is Involved?

All Attending Physicians and Residents should be encouraged to participate.  We know that we have the clinical expertise and technical skills to care for our patients but equally as important is our communication, engagement, and connection with them.

When Does It Start?

September 30, 2023

How Can I Be Apart of It?

It's simple. Take the Pledge. Join the movement, wear the Commit to Sit paraphernalia and sit with your patients.
